superb analogy grendel!! although i visit this site almost as regularly as before (tons of great music still here), i certainly don't visit the dead's site much at all. that sour taste just wont go away while bobby's oh-so-carefully-chosen-words "see ya" are still resonating on my eardrums.

Comments came during a radio interview he gave in, I think, Colorado prior to a Ratdog show. I'm sure someone can provide a link to that interview, but basically it was Bob sounding EXTREMELY annoyed at those who were angry about the SBD's being taken away from this site.

At one point, referring to news of a proposed boycott of GD.NET, he said something like "for all those people who want to boycott us...good, I hope they do ...see ya", and the contempt in his voice was positively dripping.

(this is not something the moderators here are crazy about revisiting, btw...just FYI...as I said in my posting above here, I find Bob's position odd mostly b/c my assumption--w/out any proof--is that the official site actually benefits from the SBD's being on this site, and would increase, not decrease, their bottom line).

yeah, that still stings.

Much like Diana reigns in the bitter and uncivilized posts that sometimes denigrate the otherwise worthy and important discussion of this emotionally charged issue, I think it was really unofrtunate that Bob chose to dismiss so readily the very fans that out him in such an economically fortuitous vantage point in the first place.

BTW, please continue to recommend high quality sounding and well played AUD's you find here. Always like your reviews.

I totally agree grendel, for most of the Dick's Pick's I have bought the awareness came from browsing this site first. It was like, "I'm tired of my 10th gen cassette copy", then before the Archives it was on to checking etree ftp servers or bt.etree or Furthernet every day for somebody to seed the show. Finally, I found out about the Music Archives and would go to look it up, and it would say "Buy Dick's Pick 24". Cool, so I would go and buy it. Now, there is no way in my entire remaining life I could afford to go buy all those SBDs. I am not even going to try.

To understand how some people feel so betrayed, you have to go back to the beginnings of etree. Before that, trading unfortunately meant trying to get into some elitist trading circle. But, partly in reaction to online mp3 pollution, etree really opened everything up for lossless trading, and thousands of people devoted a signficant fraction of their lives to culling though all the sources to find the best surviving lossless sources for all the shows. There were hundreds of etree ftp sites at any given time devoted to spreading the music, including collecting uploads. Lineage was meticulously traced and catalogued and md5's were put online to make sure the best sources were circulating. Now I cannot say I made any great contribution to this process, but I watched this process unfold enough to realize that it all that took a lot of time, effort and money on the part of devoted fans. Finally, everything seemed to get consolidated here. Although I don't agree, I can understand why some must feel it was all like some unintentional "honeypot sting".

I am very grateful for all of the auds and all of the other music still here, so I am sorry I had to spell that out for the people replying in all caps. I think they just don't understand the history on how all the best sources and wide variety of shows were collected in the first place.

Well, I'll continue buying DicksPicks and such, continue to research and discover great Aud shows here AND cross reference some of the Streaming SB's here with their availability on gdlive. Example: I just downloaded a great SB of 5/9/77 off of gdlive after reading about it here.

* peace and love abound *

not quite sure to whom you are referring, but i don't see that either myself nor GC are "freaking out" over this. at the moment, this seems like a relatively calm discussion concerning an interesting subject.
